What It's Like to Live in Neahkahnie Beach

Life in Neahkahnie Beach moves at its own pace. Mornings often start with a walk down to the beach, wide, flat, and rarely crowded even in summer, and end watching the sun drop into the ocean from a deck above the treeline. Neighbors know each other. Dogs run loose on the sand. It's the kind of place where people drive slowly, not because of traffic laws but because they genuinely don't want to miss anything.

The community sits at the base of Neahkahnie Mountain, and that geography shapes everything about it. Homes are tucked into the hillside, many with elevated views over the coastline and Nehalem Bay. The forest comes right up to the edges of properties. On foggy mornings and there are plenty - the whole place feels like it's floating.

Manzanita is just a few minutes south, which means you're never far from a good cup of coffee, a farmers market, or dinner at one of the Coast's better restaurants. But Neahkahnie itself stays quiet. That's the whole point.

Things to Do and See in Neahkahnie Beach

  • Oswald West State Park — Essentially in the backyard, this is one of Oregon's most beloved state parks. Trails wind through old-growth Sitka spruce, Short Sand Beach offers a protected cove popular with surfers and families, and the hike to the top of Neahkahnie Mountain rewards you with one of the most sweeping views on the entire Oregon Coast — stretching north past Cannon Beach and south down toward the bay.
  • The Beach — The shoreline runs for miles without interruption. At low tide the sand flats go on forever, tide pools appear along the rocky outcroppings near the mountain's base, and you can walk for an hour and feel completely alone.
  • Nehalem Bay State Park — A short drive south and a completely different experience. Calm water, kayaking, crabbing, and a campground that fills up every summer with people who've been coming back for decades. The bay is also a well-known spot for birdwatching, particularly during migration season.
  • Manzanita — Just minutes away and has everything you actually need: a grocery store, hardware store, yoga studio, wine bar, and a handful of restaurants that punch well above their weight for a town that size. Rockaway Beach and Tillamook are a short drive further south for anything else.
